Shipping container dimensions by type
Shipping containers come in different sizes and types, each with unique dimensions that determine their capacity and suitability for specific cargo. The most common container sizes are 20ft and 40ft, with standard heights of 8’6″. High cube containers are taller at 9’6″, while smaller options include 10ft and 45ft containers. Open top and flat rack containers have different dimensions to accommodate cargo that is too large or bulky for standard containers. It is important to consider the dimensions of different container types when selecting the right container for your shipping or storage needs.
Inside Dimensions
Shipping containers typically have corrugated sides with a depth of 1 inch (25mm), which reduces the external width dimension by 2 inches (50mm). The back end is also corrugated and the doors are about 2 inches (50mm) thick, which results in a reduction of around 3 inches (75mm) from the length.
The main reduction in dimensions is with the height of the container. The floor has an underside clearance of about 6 inches (150mm) and a thickness of 27mm (1.1 inches). The roof is also corrugated, resulting in an internal dimension of around 8 inches less than external, or 7ft 10 inches (2.39m). However, this can vary depending on the floor thickness and construction method used.
The door height is also reduced by the steel top rail above it, which is typically 4 inches (100mm), resulting in an entrance height of 7ft 6ins (2.28m). However, this can also vary slightly depending on the specific container.
Container Weights
When it comes to shipping containers, there are several different types of weights to consider. The first weight to take into account is the tare weight. This is the weight of the container itself, including the structural components and any additional equipment like doors and locks. The tare weight is important to know because it affects the maximum weight that can be loaded into the container for transport.
The second type of weight is the payload weight, which is the weight of the cargo being transported inside the container. This weight limit is determined by the container’s size and strength, as well as the regulations of the shipping company and the countries involved in the transport. It is important to ensure that the payload weight does not exceed the maximum weight capacity of the container, as this can lead to safety hazards and legal issues.
The third type of weight is the gross weight, which is the combined weight of the container and its payload. This weight is used to determine the cost of shipping and to ensure that the container is within legal weight limits for transportation. In some cases, gross weight may also be used to calculate taxes or import duties. It is important to accurately calculate the gross weight to avoid any issues during transport and to ensure that the container is safe and legal to transport.
